When I was growing up music was a big love of mine and I would listen to the radio and my cassettes at any given opportunity, and I would quickly learn the words and sing along happily out of tune! Whenever we would go for a day out or off on our holiday, I would make my own cassettes featuring my favourite tracks from the radio or from compilation cassettes, and persuade my dad to allow me to have them played in the car. It would frustrate the hell out of me though, that we would start off the journey with my music at a sound level that I could hear in the back of the car. However, I soon became annoyed by the fact that every time my Mum and Dad would talk to one another, Dad would turn the volume down and would not turn it back up making it hard for me to listen to my tunes!!! Therefore, most car journeys with all my family would find me playing my cassettes in my walkman instead!!
Luckily Mum was a young Mum and liked some of the 'in' hits of the day so she had lots of cool albums on cassette which she would play when it was her driving in her car and she would also sing along, in tune, loudly to them!!
From what I can recall, some of my favourite car journey songs from my youth which bring back happy memories are:
Aha - The Sun Always Shines On TV
Katrinna And The waves - Walking on Sunshine
Aztec Camera - Somewhere In My Heart
Fairground Attraction - Perfect
Madonna - Into The Groove
The Bangles - Walk Like An Egyptian
Duran Duran - The Reflex
Wham! - Freedom
Pet Shop Boys - Its A Sin
Nowdays of course there are no more cassettes or even albums to buy and play, its all about downloading and I must admit I dont buy many albums nowadays. I dont know if it is the fact that I have children now and therefore I dont get time to listen to my music anymore, but for someone who was into her music BIG time for much of her life, I kind of miss buying a new album and listening to it until I have learnt all the songs! Its all about the nursery ryhmes now which I am made to sing along to on car journeys!!
If like me you feel your car journeys could do with an injection of music to make your travel time more enjoyable and to make a chnage from nursery ryhmes or the radio playlists, then why not check out this ready made one devised through Spotify. The Best Summer Holiday Songs has been complied by cumbrian-cottages.co.uk after people were invited to share their favourite 'going on holiday' songs: tunes which reminded them off their favourite holidays and brought back happy memories for them.

I have to say that a few of those would make me feel happy and in a holiday mood and make me want to wail sing along at the top of my voice!!!
What about you? What would be on your holiday song playlist?
