Our Tree

We moved to our new house in the middle of winter. The trees were bare and it seemed to be so cold and wet for so long. Having not had a garden before at our previous home, it was important to the boys daddy and I that when we moved we had to have a garden. It wasn't that the boys didn't enjoy lots of fresh air and outdoors fun before we moved, as we lived near a wonderful park and we would visit there often. However, nothing beats having your own bit of outdoor space of your own that can be entered simply by walking out of your back door.

In our garden stands a tree - I am not sure what it is exactly although wild cherry or crab apple have been suggested by family members. When we arrived here it was a focal point of the lawn and had such pretty coloured bark, but it was hard to determine quite how magnificent it would be once spring arrived and allowed it to dress itself in green folliage.

It stands proudly with its out stretched branches which are now covered in green lush leaves, and I cannot believe how much of the grass is shaded by its leafyness. Perfect for playing beneath and eating picnics under on hot and sunny days.

It is a great tree, sturdy and tall and will no doubt be one that will be climbed by two adventurous boys at some point in the future ( they have already hung of its branches with Daddy's assistance! ). Possibly even have a tree house built within it. I love *that* thought: that this tree will be part of my boy's childhood, watching over then and protecting them from the suns strong rays. Its strength allowing them to shimmy up its trunk any maybe play within its branches in a homemade tree house!

I also like the fact that this tree will ,therefore, be remembered fondly when I am older and greyer as one that brought so much pleasure to me and my boys. When they are all grown up and left home and have families of their own to raise, I can look out of my kitchen window and see this tree and it will make me smile as I reminisce. And hopefully, I will have grandchildren one day who will have as much fun playing beneath, around and in it as my two will have done.

Its a scary thought to think that one day when they stand next to it as they do in this photograph, they will easily be able to reach those branches and suddenly this tree will not seem as big as it does now. It will be Burton and Jenson who will the tall, strong and sturdy ones in the photo alongside a tree which although still bigger than my boys, wont seem as huge in comparison like it does now because my boys will be grown men.

  1. Ahhh Trees are SO Special - we have one on our lawn that we sometimes just look at. Yesterday we got it "pruned" and it looks awful - like night of the living dead tree. My OH keeps saying its like a really bad haircut. We keep hoping it grows back quickly. (Who knew you could get so overprotective about a tree!)

  4. Lovely photo. I love trees. It is scary to think that they will be able to touch the branches and probably climb up it very soon. x

  5. You're lucky to have such an 'old' tree in the garden, when e moved it was a very young garden despite the house being 40 years old. I planted an apple tree a couple of years back and love watching it grow but by the time it's sturdy enough for a tree house my girls will be too old ... mummy won't be though :)

Oh Jenny that's lovely. I have a tree that's mine as well (I watch it out my bedroom window) - and the children both had a tree planted for them by my dad when they were born. However, I have never had a treehouse - hope you manage to create one for the boys!

This is a really lovely post, I love how you described the tree from what it is to what it will become to you and you family. Really beautiful x

  11. I think it's so lovely to have these kind of physical reference points that show your children growing up. It's what makes me so desperate to move into a "forever home" but that still seems a little way off for us. It will be lovely to get photos by that tree on important days and then have them to look back at in the future. x

  12. What a lovely post Jenny, there is something a bit emotional about trees. I remember the fondness I had for a fabulous willow in our garden (sadly no more). Will be great to look back on this post when the boys are bigger :)

  13. This is such a beautiful post! I remember thinking when we visited, I probably said at the time, that your tree would make an excellent climbing tree. Beautiful and they're going to love it in the future.
