Family Portraits Capture More Than Just The Moment

I love taking photos. I am by no means a pro with a camera and since I had the boys almost all of my photos are taken on my smart phone because it is handy to have something close to hand which I can capture a memory of my boys, and upload instantly if I want to and share with my friends and family within a few minutes. Long gone are the days of having a film developed at the local chemists and then filling a photo album with them, now all my photos are mainly on my phone or my computer or in cyber space!

As a result, portrait photography is not always something people think of. However, there are still plenty of advantages of having a family portrait to put in your home. Last year, Facebook announced that around 300 million photos get uploaded each day [CNET] which roughly translates to one photo each, every three days. What an amazingly high statistic! It discovered that the majority of these photos are taken on days or nights out, and although tagging people means they are good for capturing the moment and sharing them around at a fast rate, the sheer amount means it can be hard to locate favourites amongst all the pictures taken on nights out pulling questionable poses *ahem*
That is one reason why the family portrait is still so important to have in real life. It captures some treasured family time or a happy memory like a holiday photo or a wedding or christening which is there all the time hanging on your living room wall and there is no need to scroll through your hardware to find it. Such images also make beautiful gifts for loved ones to cherished forever , and have to adorn their walls in their homes too.

Sitting for a professional photographer is something my family and I have not done, not because I would not like a portrait taken of us, but only because my OH is a keen amateur photographer and he has a lot of equipment to take such photos himself. However, to get him to do this does require a lot of nagging gentle nudging!
However, for those who don't have someone like my OH in their home sitting for professional photographers is easy to organise and can be done in a calm and relaxing environment. Afterall, a professional photographer does not need a crowded background to add emotion and narrative into a photograph.
