First Snow Timers (Flashback Friday)

Last Friday we had some snow. Well, when I say snow it was merely a flutter of sleety white mush that seemed to melt as quickly as it lay on the ground. Both boys were awake early anyway (5am for Jenson and having just got him back down at 6am, quarter of an hour later Burton woke us all up) and were VERY excited when I informed them that it was snowing.

Burton made me smile because he spent the whole morning wishing me a "merry christmas mummy"! This is due to TV programmes like Peppa Pig and films about Christmas  always having snow at Christmas. Burton was most put out and actually didn't believe me when I told him it was Christmas Eve back in December because it wasn't snowing!!!

Anyway, we were breakfasted, teeth cleaned, dressed and wearing our outdoor clothing by 8.30am!!! By this time the sleety snow had stopped and was already slushy underfoot, but that didn't stop the boys from enjoying it!

It was Jenson's first experience of seeing and feeling snow and he loved stomping across the snowy grass with his wellies making footprints and looking at the imprints he had made.

It was also the first time I have been out in the snow playing for a while as the last time we had heavy snow was back in December 2010 when I was pregnant with Jenson. Before that was January 2009 when I was pregnant with Burton and I remember having to carefully walk to the bus stop for my 7am bus trying not to slip. Having successfully managed this, the same week while the snow started to thaw and was icey, a white van drive past me on my way home from work and threw a snowball ,which hit me in the (pregnant) stomach! Ruddy idiots and quite frankly ruddy rude of them! - I was not impressed at the time I can tell you!

Anyway, the winter of 2010 was Burton's first time in the snow (he would have been 17 months) and it has to be said that he had a lot more snow to explore compared to what Jenson got last week! OH took the three of us over to his parents as they had a lot of snow in their garden and Burton got to ride on a sledge -which he found funny.

I try to imagine how it must be to someone who sees snow for the first time - it is hard to know what they are feeling. To see everything covered in a white cold blanket and to see white flakes fall from the sky. I cant even begin to recall how I felt the first time I experienced it - too long ago now. I think that for the most part, the snow brings out the big kid in us all, reminding us of our childhoods and evoking happy memories of school being closed, building snowmen, having snowball fights and sledging on dustbin lids down snow covered grassy slopes. Happy snowy days :)

  1. He looks like a completely different child in this photo with the hair off his face, I really see Jenson in him. Love his delight. I've tried to imagine what it must be like to have the world you recognise covered in a coating which hides everything familiar, it must be a little bit scary at first? The photos of Jenson exploring his footsteps are enchanting!

(Can't see the linky, did you forget to put in the code?)

  2. I have those PJ bottoms!! LOL Random observations aside, it looks like Burton is having a blast in the snow. I do think too what it must be like for children to see things like snow for the first time. And cats too. My cat Casper was so bemused by the snow when he first saw it as a kitten. He wouldn't step in it LOL

  3. I love being in the snow and seeing it through Lucas' eyes, it was always more fun for children. Burton looked like he enjoyed the sledge when he was young more than Lucas did...it wasn't for him! I love seeing the snowy pictures of them all wrapped up xx

Gorgeous snowy photos- and I can not believe someone threw a snowball at your pregnant tummy. I would have been furious! Idiots! I have been out in it too much for a pregnant person I think, I went sledging the other day and when I told my husband he told me off! x
