My Week That Was: Mostly Illness

This week has not been a very nice week that was as Burton has been very ill. It also makes for a bit of a boring post as we haven't done very much, but it's good to keep a record of it all to look back on I guess!

Monday
Burton had woken up last last night absolutely boiling hot (temp of 40.1!) and crying. We gave him a drink and some calpol which he threw up. We managed to get him back to bed at about midnight.
This morning when he awoke he was still hot so more calpol was required and I cancelled his Ladybirds session. We spent the day at home mostly watching CBeebies and playing with toys. I always know when Burton is off colour because he naps on the sofa during the day, which is what he did this afternoon.
Jenson was happy at least!

Burton awoke again tonight at 10pm and we gave him a drink and he brought it back up again. We eventfully got him back to sleep at 1am.

Tuesday
Burton woke up at 4.30am this morning and again after having calpol and water he was sick as he had a temperature still. OH had to go out to work today which meant we had no ca but as Burton was ill then it didn't matter as we wouldn't be going anywhere.
We had noticed last night that Burton had a cluster of bruises on both knees and one on his arm which we hadn't noticed and seemed to appear quite suddenly. They also didn't look like new or normal bruises so I was concerned that maybe this was something to be alarmed about, due to a childhood illness which both my brother and uncle had.
Burton's granma popped over to see us mid morning as Burton awoke from a nap and was burning with a high temp still and was sick! This was enough for granma to announce that he should see a doctor. Of course I couldn't get an appointment until 3.30pm so we decided to take him to the hospital dressed only in his pants but armed with both his monkey friends.

When we eventually got seen by a doctor, he was given a thorough once over and the doctor concluded that he had slightly swollen glands, and a runny nose and gunky eyes, and a slight rash sporadically placed on his body, which were all signs of a viral bug apparently. The 'bruises' were still a mystery so I needed to keep an eye on them and see if they increased over the next few days. Also to just keep giving him calpol and if temp hasn't gone down by Thursday or Friday then see my GP. If the 'bruises' get worse then take him back to hospital.
Back home, Burton was not too bad once we had his temp under control and even managed to eat a small pice of marmite on toast and some chocolate buttons. However, as soon as the calpol and ibuprofen wore off he deteriorated.

Wednesday
We decided today that Jenson should go and stay with my Mum, mainly because we don't want him to catch whatever it was Burton might have and Burton needed peace and rest and Jenson needed playing with and it wasn't fair that he would be stuck indoors with such nice weather. So I took him to Mums while OH sat with Burton (who was still the same) and worked.
When I returned home Burton was still the same and to well. I decided then that I wouldn't wait until Friday and if he still woke up tomorrow with a high temp then he would be going to the doctors tomorrow.
Jenson had a lovely afternoon with Grandma and Grandad at least!

Thursday
Burton still had a high temp of 40.3 so I made a doctors appointment. The doctor said that she wasn't really sure what was wrong but hazard a guess that he caught a virus, hence the high temperature and then because he was run down he got a sore throat, red and sore inner ears and swollen glands and conjunctivitis. So he was prescribed anti biotics and eye drops! She said to give it 36 hours for the anti biotics to work and if he was not better or indeed worse by Saturday morning then we were to contact the emergency/ out of hours doctor.
As you can imagine, trying to get him to take foul tasting medicine was not easy! When we got home from the doctors he looked the worse I had seen him all week. He hadn't eaten anything since Tuesday really asides from some chocolate buttons, and not a decent meal since Saturday and just looked ghastly :(

It is fair to say that we were all very worried.

Friday
After another bad night and another where we all slept in the same room again, Burton still awoke with a high temperature. OH couldnt even work today, well he took phone calls and spent a bit of time at his desk but it was just horrid waiting to see if the medication would kick in and do its stuff. Due to only really digesting anti biotics and calpol he now had a very bad runny tummy aswell. The day was spent sitting around, drinking tea/coffee and having to force Burton to take his medicine and encourage him to drink water. But bless him, he did manage a little smile for me.

Meanwhile, Jenson was enjoying a nice day out with Grandma and Grandad who took him to Exeter for a spot of lunch

Burton had a very long nap this afternoon and Daddy joined him.

When he woke up he seemed a little brighter and he managed to eat a little piece of bread and some chocolate fingers! Maybe he was on the mend .... ?

Saturday
Well today was D-day with regards to Burton getting better and thankfully for the firs time since Sunday he didn't have a temperature when he work up this morning! He managed a little breakfast , just half a piece of marmite on bread and a couple of chocolate fingers and he looked better, still awful but better. I cannot express how relieved his Daddy and I were that he was on the mend at last. However, he did have a rash on parts of his body so I phoned the out of hours doctor and he concluded it could be a reaction to the anti biotics so we were to stop giving it to him. If he deteriorated, then we were to call back for a home visit. This hasn't happened!!
Jenson came home at lunchtime and I had the biggest and longest cuddles and smiles from him. He was so pleased to see me, as I was to see him.

And the cheeky boy wouldn't eat his own lunch he wanted to share mine!

Grandma and Grandad bought Burton his as a get well soon present (he took this photo)

Sunday
Burton is continuing to improve slowly and I think by this afternoon he was a little bored as he was played up a few times - a sign he is better me thinks! I don't blame him for being bored, he has been stuck indoors for almost a week. He as eaten more today too and his runny tummy is much better now too. He found a wooden racing car which I bought for him to paint to give to Daddy for Father's Day, and insisted on painting it, so I let him and Daddy has an early gift instead now.

Jenson was a bit off colour today though! Not sure why but he had two naps, was a bit grissley and felt very hot although his temperature stayed under 38 and he didn't eat much either! We are really hoping he isn't about to come down with something now!

So there you have it, my not very exciting week that was. I hope it will be a long time until we have another like it!

  1. Oh I really feel for you. I still find anything with a temp sooo frightening. Hope you all manage to relax for the next couple of days. Lily has had a viral rash for the past couple of days, they appear to be doing the rounds at the mo :(
