You will need:
Some stewing beef (i used 400g which serves 2-3 people)
3 large carrots
1 large onion
2 oxo cubes
splash of olive oil
4 tbsp flour
black pepper
2 tsp tomato puree
1 bouquet garni
pinch of mixed herbs eg. rosemary, thyme
1 bottle of real ale
(If my OH liked mushrooms then I would add these too).
Then you need to:
coat the beef in the flour which I seasoned with black pepper
heat a few splashes of oil in a pan and brown the beef for a few minutes
crumble in the oxo cubes and mix well
add the ale and bring to the boil
add the tomato puree, the herbs, bouquet garni and allow to boil for a minute two
remove from the heat
meanwhile chop an onion and the carrots and place into your slow cooker
pour over the beef mix and stir
place on a low heat for about 8 hours, season to taste and serve with either buttery mash and veg or another thing I like to do is make a couple of puff pastry (ready made off of course!) rounds, cook in the oven and make the casserole in to steak and ale pie by placing the pie lids on top of each serving of the casserole .
this looks lovely...and check you out with your bouquet garni ! I say add the mushrooms & let him pick them out! x
ReplyDeleteThank you!, a bay leaf would also work ha ha I had bouquet garni in my cupboard! X
ReplyDeletemy Mum always used to put Bay Leaves in...I just throw in whatever herbs are in my cupboard ! x
ReplyDeleteMmmmm this looks amazing Jenny! I may just have to attempt to make this. Om nom nom xx
ReplyDeleteDad and Mr. TBaM would love this! I'm going to do this for them one Sunday. Thanks missus
ReplyDeleteIt's tasty and when ou are a busy mum it's an easy way to still be a domestic goddess lol x
ReplyDeleteI hope they enjoy it! Btw a bay leaf works too if you don't have bouquet garni! I will amend ingredients to say this but giving you the heads up! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh Jenny this looks amazing! I love casserole and I love steak and ale. The perfect combination. I know it is nearly midnight but it is making me hungry just looking at it! x
ReplyDeleteThat looks yummy! I am desperate for slow cooker recipes!
ReplyDeleteGod, I'm glad I have my mouth shut else I would have drooled all over my phone whilst reading this!
ReplyDeleteMy hubby would love this... do you reckon, we could do a pastry topping? Not sure it would work in a slow cooker??? Thanks for joining into #scsunday
ReplyDeleteI make it into a pie as I cook some puff pastry rounds n the oven and then place on top of casserole once served. So only a pie top but you could make a proper pie too. Haven't tried pastry in the slow cooker though.....could be worth a try one day! X
ReplyDeleteHow long would it take on a high setting do you think?
ReplyDeleteSorry for late reply about 4 hours on high I would think. Depends on size of beef chunks and how tender you want the beef.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if you ever thought of changing the page
ReplyDeletelayout of your blog? Its very well written; I love what
youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect
with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or
2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?
