Last Monday (15th) was Burton's 4th birthday and although we had a small family gathering at tea time where we cut his birthday cake, we actually held his main party the day before where his little friends were invited. We kept is simple as owing to the glorious weather we filled some paddling pools and let the children cool off in the water before they ate their food.
Burton loves the Room On The Broom book and the animated film so when he agreed that he would like to have this as the theme to his birthday party, I was actually very happy and pleased because I just knew that there would be lots of fun to be had with making the party food and birthday cake.
A Room On The Broom Birthday Cake
The cake was meant to be a cauldron but in the end as I am not good with fondant icing, I decided to stay clear of this idea! Instead after seeing witches hat cupcakes on the internet, I decided to adopt this idea and make it my own and bigger.
It was actually quite easy to make - it was just such hot weather that it was a race against time to get it decorated and in the fridge before it melted!
Room On The Broom Party Food
Place white marshmallow and whole strawberries onto cake pop sticks
Skewers filled with cheese, grapes, cucumber, tomato and a star shaped potato savoury with a blue straw added to the end of the skewer (as per the Witches wand in the book)
Simply dip the end of a breadstick in cream cheese and coat with grated cheese (I made some with marmite and grated cheese too)
Ham and cheese spread sandwitches cut using a witch shaped cookie cutter (the bread bones were same but used a bone shaped cookie cutter)
these were meant to have lollipop sticks stuck into them but they collapsed! Hence more twirls than whirls!
Mini jaffa cakes topped with chocolate iced gems
Jelly (any flavour) - add some jelly sweets to your bowl/glass and pour over the jelly and set as normal. I added squidgy mushrooms (aka toadstools) and bones to stick to the ingredients used in the book by the witch at the end to make the broom
Cover cornets with melted chocolate and cover with rainbow sprinkles, then make some cupcakes/muffins (I made chocolate but up to you), top with buttercream and place your chocolate witches hat on top.
*You could just serve the chocolate cornets by themselves as another party food*

It was such an amazing party and you really excelled yourself with all the little added extras and attention to detail. I did think the cake was a stroke of genius and that the witches hat was one of the simplest, but effective ways of decorating it and making it truly identifiable. I also really liked the kebab wands; almost a whole meal in one stick! Thank you for inviting us, we had a brilliant time!
