Back in the summer - well if you can call it that, after all that rain we had! - my dishwasher broke down. I found myself a bit gutted about it to be honest. I mean of course I can wash up by hand - its all I did before I had a dishwasher four years ago. I did it as part of my job running my own cafe. In fact prior to actually having one in my new kitchen, I told me OH that I wasn't actually bothered about having one, as having never had one before I naively believed that I could manage without one knowing I had a baby on the way and having a man who doesn't wash or dry up!! I am very pleased that my OH ignored my foolish notion and got one installed anyway!
So when my machine broke down a few months back, I was without one for about 10 weeks in total and I am ashamed to admit that I resented having to wash up. It also made me appreciate my dish washing time saving appliance very much! I was amazed by how much of my day was spent having to wash up. I mean we eat three times a day, and several mugs are used for hot drinks, and plastic bowls for the boys snacks and it is surprising how much is accumulated in an average day, made worse when visitors come and more washing up has to be done! Plus draining boards are not large enough to accommodate one family meals worth of pots pans, plates, bowls, glasses, cutlery etc... so you have to stop mid way to dry and put away before starting again! My sink time and time spent in the kitchen clearing and cleaning probably quadrupled!!
We are moving house soon and in the interim are staying in a holiday let and I have no idea if it has a dishwasher - probably not so for the next couple of months I may be resorting to washing by hand once again. Also, now I think of it I cant remember whether or not our new house has one integrated into its newly built kitchen. I will have to direct my OH to some dishwasher deals pronto so that we change this quickly, in case he decides that I should continue washing up again by hand ........forever! *shudders*.
Basically, I have been spoilt by having a dishwasher now, and I feel I am just too posh to wash - up!! Eeeeeek I am a washing up snob, what has become of me!!

I completely agree! I've always had to wash by hand until we moved into our new house this year. I never realised how much of a God send a dishwasher is!! I'd collapse in a sobbing heap if mine broke! I've two young boys who go through cups and bowls like they're going out of fashion, without the dishwasher I'd be practically chained to the sink :(
